Ipswich Historical Information

Introduction:

Ipswich is a large and vibrant town situated at the head of the Orwell estuary in the county of Suffolk, in the East Anglia region of Britain, approximately 66 miles north-east of London. Picture: Kentwell Hall, Suffolk - Recreation event - Boy near moat

The town of Ipswich was rebuilt in the 19th Century although evidence of past eras has survived in the artefacts and buildings left behind through the ages, namely the medieval churches, of which there are approximately twelve in existence. This proves the importance and size of the town since early times. There are many timber-framed dwelling houses and other ancient buildings in the area including the site of Cardinal Wolsey's College, St Peters Street and Silent Street dating from the fifteenth century. Amongst these is the former Royal Oak Inn. This building is now number 7 Oak Lane, known as Oak House, situated off Northgate Street.
